Originally from Batchewana First Nation, Karen Bird is an Investment Advisor with RBC Dominion Securities. With over 20 years of direct business industry experiences including; branch management, personal financial services, commercial lending and account management, business advisory services, housing property management, renewable energy, project management, co-management, business plan writing and start-up company coaching. Her formal education includes a BA from Trent University in Native Studies with focuses in business, economic development and organizational behavior. She also received her professional designation in Project Management.
In addition to her work experience and credentials, Karen was the proud recipient of the 2015 Influential Women of Northern Ontario’s Aboriginal Leadership Award.
Karen is a single mother of four who has spent most of her life on reserve. She is a jingle dress dancer, values her language and carries many cultural teachings. Karen has served on Band Council and was the past President of Batchewana Band Industries, one of only three on reserve industrial parks in Ontario. Today, she sits on the Board for the Northern Ontario Angels, Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, Anishnaabe Awareness Advisory Group, the Economic Diversity and Growth Standing Committee for Sault Ste. Marie, a Founding member Royal Eagles, an RBC internal aboriginal employee group, and participates in several women in business networking groups and organizations. She is a strong advocate for sexual assault survivors through numerous speaking engagements and by assisting with women’s self-defence classes while working on her blue belt in Jiu Jitsu. In the near future, Karen will be creating a foundation, Nahkendan – Knowing Your Truth which will provide programming to assist survivors and their families in the healing process.
