Pierre Zundel

Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of Laurentian University

Prior to his nomination as Interim President, Dr. Zundel served as Laurentian University’s Vice-President Academic and Provost from July, 2016 to June, 2017. In that role, he was Vice-Chair of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s Board of Directors, Chair of Contact North/Contact Nord’s Audit Committee and Vice-Chair of the Greater Sudbury Economic Development Corporation’s Board of Directors. From 2009-2016, Dr. Zundel was President of the University of Sudbury, a bilingual, tri-cultural institution in the Jesuit tradition federated with Laurentian University. Additionally, Dr. Zundel was also President of the Consortium of Francophone Universities of Ontario from 2010- 2014 as well as Chair of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada from 2015-2016.

A graduate of the University of Toronto (Bachelors and Masters) and of the Université Laval (PhD) in forestry, Dr. Zundel has taught forestry and occupied academic leadership positions at both the Université de Moncton (UdeM) and the University of New Brunswick (UNB).

Dr. Zundel was named a 3M National Teaching Fellow by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2003 and received the Educational Leadership Award from the Atlantic Association of Universities in 2002.  Dr. Zundel was previously a volunteer firefighter, fire chief and paramedic in rural New Brunswick.

Dr. Zundel lives in downtown Sudbury with his wife Karin.
